Dedicated to caring for Mother Earth and Her creatures, Shree Peetha Nilaya is committed to treading gently on the planet with minimal impact on Her resources. Every year, we aim to be more in harmony with the environment and to increase our self-sufficiency in many ways.
Our ‘happy cows’ are naturally pasture-grazed and provide the milk, butter and yoghurt for our cooking and ceremonies. Loved and honoured, they will be with us for the rest of their lives.
Our own bees provide honey in the summer. (220 kilograms in 2017!)
Our extensive vegetable gardens give us plenty of organically-grown produce to enjoy year-round.
Bio-diversity supports habitats for bees, butterflies, birds, and beneficial insects, toads and frogs.
Our Just Love Festival electric car shows our commitment to the environment wherever we go. (The car does tend to draw a little bit of attention!)
We harvest the sunshine with solar panels and it helps us offset our energy use and costs. With this photovoltaic system on the roof, we gain an additional 10 kilowatts of electricity per hour.
In addition to this, we use a combined heat and power unit that produces 30 kilowatts per hour of heat and 20 kw/h of electricity, which is simultaneously used as an emergency power generator. Together with the large solar thermal system, it provides all the hot water needed for the entire centre from May to October.
For additional food items, we endorse Fair Trade suppliers.
- We collect the rainwater for our gardens.
- We compost all food scraps.
- We only use biodegradable cleaning products throughout the ashram.
- And of course, we recycle all paper, cartons, plastic, and glass.
