Traditional Vegan Chai
from The Ashram Kitchen
20 March 2021
There’s nothing else quite like coming in from the cold to a warm cup of chai. A crowd favourite at the Bhajan Cafe and (during the Just Love Festival), The Ashram’s chai will warm you up from the inside out and give you that extra boost you need in the morning or after-lunch slump.
This traditional Indian drink contains many spices known for their health benefits and whole-body support.
Know Your Spices
As you know, we make this in large quantities for all our guests and residents here, but you can use this recipe easily at home to make just five servings.
Improves Digestion - all of the spices in chai have gentle warming properties that can help ease a troubled stomach or improve overall digestion.
Clears Your Mind - cardamom and star anise have all been used to help clear fog from the mind and promote clarity and focus.
Cold Aid - the warmth of these spices may also promote recovery from the aches, chills, and fevers from the common cold.
Make it at home
While chai may be ubiquitous with the Bhajan Cafe, a trip to The Ashram, and time spent with your spiritual family, you can still make it at home. We tend to make large portions (to serve our ever-growing family) but we've minimised our recipe here to make about 5 servings.
What You'll Need
- 400 ml water
- 10 crushed cardamom pods
- 5 crushed black peppercorns
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- ½ star anise
- 5 cm fresh ginger, chopped or grated
- 3-5 Tbs sugar
- 5 Tbs black tea
- 1200 ml oat milk
Step by Step
- Add water, spices, and sugar to a pan
- Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally
- Add the oat milk
- Let it simmer again, stirring occasionally
- Pour, serve, enjoy
The Final Result
Bring some of The Ashram warmth home when you make this chai and share it with your friends and family. And you might even want to offer some to your personal deities too!
Whether it's for early mornings or your afternoon tea, chai offers the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, with the added touch of your fond memories here at The Ashram.
